Student members of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Christian Medical & Dental Association organized an Aug. 29 event with a Geisinger Commonwealth alumnus, who spoke about her experiences in missionary medicine. Samantha Conroy, M.D., a member of Geisinger Commonwealth's Class of 2014, not only shared her experiences working overseas during residency, but she also discussed her decision to participate in a two-year post residency program through Samaritan's Purse.

Alexa Mills of Renovo is the inaugural recipient of the "Stephen and Pamela Poorman Physician Annual Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Randle H. Storm and Dr. Sanjay Doddaman." The scholarship benefits medical students who either reside in Clinton County or have graduated from Lock Haven University. Ms. Mills is a member of Geisinger Commonwealth's Class of 2021 and is a native of Renovo, Clinton County and is a 2016 graduate of Lock Haven University.

Members of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (Geisinger Commonwealth) first Doylestown campus cohort received master of biomedical sciences (MBS) degrees at a ceremony held Aug. 13 at the Scranton campus.

Brian V. Entler of Commack, a first-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, was co-author of a paper published in the August 2017 edition of Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, a primary research journal in neurophysiology. The paper, entitled "The Effects of Fat Body Tyramine Level on Gustatory Responsiveness of Honeybees (Apis mellifera) Differ between Behavioral Castes," examined the effects of the biogenic amine tyramine and its receptors in shaping social behavior. Although humans do not express this biogenic amine, modeling its projection neurons and its role on gustatory response may have implications for human neurology.

A group of second-year medical students at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) have planned the sixth annual Steamtown Health Fair in partenrship with Scranton Primary Health Care Center.

Several master of biomedical sciences (MBS) students have been elected to Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (Geisinger Commonwealth) Doylestown campus Graduate Student Council (GSC) for the 2017-18 academic year. GSC represents the united voice of graduate students and provides programs and activities, which support the school's mission and core values. The elected officers of GSC will work to strengthen existing bonds between students, faculty, staff and administration and to enrich the school's educational excellence and student affairs programs.

Students in the master of biomedical sciences program at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Doylestown campus attended the HIV Prevention and Outreach Summit in Philadelphia. The summit provides the latest information about research, evidence-based HIV prevention, outreach strategies, and best practices in targeting and connecting to care the most at-risk groups in Philadelphia.

On June 3, students in the master of biomedical sciences program at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Doylestown campus teamed with representatives of Hepatitis B United of Philadelphia to participate in the Independence Dragon Boat Regatta race.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is proud to announce that Jason Homza of Kingston, a decorated veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of the school's MD Class of 2020, has been chosen as a 2017 Tillman Scholar.

Seven members of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's MD Class of 2019 conducted research that was selected for a poster presentation at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) National Conference. The conference, attended by family medicine physicians, residents and medical students, will take place on June 27-29 in Kansas City. The AAFP poster contest had four categories: research, clinical inquiry, community project and educational program. The Geisinger Commonwealth students' poster was chosen in the category of "community project."

Laura Barna of Mountain Top, a member of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's MD Class of 2019, will publish a case presentation in an upcoming edition of the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus in the Images in Pediatric Ophthalmology section. She hopes to pursue ophthalmology as her medical specialty.

Sara Wing of Havertown, a member of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (Geisinger Commonwealth) MD Class of 2017, received the John R. and Maureen J. Pesavento Community Service Award at a ceremony on May 6. The award recognizes the medical student who has devoted the most time to community service during their four years of medical school.

Lesley Walinchus-Foster of Springfield, a member of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (Geisinger Commonwealth) MD Class of 2017, received the "Dr. Lester Saidman Award for Excellence in Emergency Medicine" at a ceremony on May 6. The award was established by Dr. Saidman's family to honor the doctor's service to the medical profession and the community.

Mary Elise Lynch of Philadelphia, a member of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (Geisinger Commonwealth) MD Class of 2017, received the Lackawanna County Medical Society Alliance (LCMSA) "Excellence in Women's Health" award at a ceremony on May 6.

Several master of biomedical sciences (MBS) students at the Doylestown campus of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) volunteered at the recent Lehigh Valley Science and Engineering Research Fair. The regional competition showcased the projects of students in grades six through 12 from the Lehigh Valley area who qualified for the regional event by winning their local competitions.

During the spring semester, several master of biomedical sciences (MBS) students at the Doylestown campus of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) took part in a shadowing experience at Matossian Eye Associates in Doylestown.

Several Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine master of biomedical sciences (MBS) students were inducted into the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Honor Society on May 6. Alpha Epsilon Lambda was founded in 1990 with the specific objective of recognizing the academic and leadership accomplishments of graduate and professional school students.

On May 1, several Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine master of biomedical sciences students at the school's Doylestown campus led the second Geisinger Commonwealth blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross and the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center. The students' active participation and their ability to raise community awareness helped the Red Cross exceed its goal of 32 donors, setting a local record.
