Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine students help beautify Scranton

Zhi-Shan Hsu, Tice Harkins, Miranda Rep, Justina Warnick, Michael Kovalick and Evan Calvo, all members of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's MD Class of 2024, helped Scranton Tomorrow clean up the downtown. Working in the rain, the students cleaned out the planters found in several blocks of Scranton's downtown area and planted fresh flowers that will beautify the city all spring and summer!

Vigil sitting: Geisinger medical students' work with Allied Hospice earns them 'Star Volunteer' award

Touch and hearing are the last senses to go when we die. It's why hospice professionals have an iron-clad rule: Assume everything you say can be heard and understood, even by a seemingly non-responsive patient - and assume these patients know when they're alone. This simple truth inspired a group of Geisinger College's School of Medicine class of 2025 to found No One Dies Alone, a volunteer group that "vigil sits" with hospice patients. And due to their compassion and dedication Allied Service Hospice recently recognized them with its Star Volunteer Award.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine student's lifesaving decision may save a life in Spain

In the spring of his first year at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM), medical student Scott Schoenborn was walking past a "Be the Match" table in the school lobby and decided to stop. "It was some paperwork and a cheek swab that would be used to determine a potential match for bone marrow donation. It took just a few minutes and I forgot about it soon after," he said. Eighteen months later that casual decision to stop had a huge impact on someone a continent away.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine students complete medical mission trip to Jamaica

A Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine faculty member and three fourth-year medical students recently completed a medical mission trip to Mandeville, Jamaica. The students examined patients, assisted with patient triage, recorded patient complaints, took vital signs, distributed medicines and helped with clinic logistics. Each student who accompanied Dr. Dawgert is a recipient of The Jennifer A. Sidari, M.D. '13 Global Health Award.
